Surviving a Shocker of a Start

It’s only March and some of you are already cooked.

You had big plans for 2025. Fresh start, better balance and finally getting on top of classroom management. Then reality hit.

You copped that class. The one where “Open your books” somehow results in a kid moonwalking while another squeals, “Why?”

And now? You’re tempted to go full Prevention Mindset.

The Prevention Mindset: Control and Crackdowns

It happens when teachers, rattled by a rocky start, play not to lose.

  • Rules get stricter.“No talking. No movement. No fun.”
  • Punishments escalate.“One more AirPod and I’m banning electricity.”
  • Micromanaging skyrockets.“You must sit there, write this and only think approved thoughts.”

It feels like control, but it’s not. Kids push back. You end up exhausted, drowning in behaviour reports and wondering if you should just open a café in the Dandenongs.

The Proactive Mindset: Consistency and Calm

Teachers who thrive after a rough start don’t play defence. They own the context.

  • They double down on routines. Predictable, boring, but bulletproof.
  • They stay authoritative, not authoritarian. No power trips, just quiet confidence.
  • They design the environment with intent. Not just seating plans, but energy plans.

Never forget that you still control the context. You’re in charge, teacher.

Yes, your start has been rough. Some classes can make you question if you even like children.

Before you go full dictator, step back. Ask, “Am I reacting to problems or creating conditions for success?”

Because the best teachers don’t chase problems all year. They build something likely to produce less problems.

Keep fighting that good fight,
