The Nod, The Wink, and The Smile

The Three Cheapest Culture-Changers You’re Not Using Enough

You know that unreal feeling when you walk into your favourite coffee shop and the barista spots you from across the room, gives you a little nod, and starts making your order without you saying a word? What follows is small talk about life, sport, and whatever random craziness is happening in the world. Over time, those tiny touchpoints build something real and warm.

That’s not coffee. That’s a good cup of morning belonging. And it costs nothing.

Now imagine that same energy at your school. Because most people reckon culture is built in big, expensive, soul-crushing whole-staff meetings where some poor bugger gets made to fall backwards into a colleague’s arms while everyone hopes and prays they don’t get dropped – and the catered lunch is somehow both cold and disappointing. That’s not culture. That’s just organised awkwardness with an invoice attached.

Culture is built in the warm micro-moments across a day. The tiny, almost-invisible signals that tell someone, “I see you, you matter, you belong here.”

And three of the most powerful tools in that arsenal are so stupidly simple we often overlook them.

The Nod. Not the dead-eyed corridor nod you give someone whose name you can’t remember. The real one. The slow, deliberate, “I see what you’re doing and it’s appreciated,” nod. Give that to a kid quietly trying hard and watch them stand a little taller. Give it to a colleague who just nailed a tough conversation and they’ll carry it all week.

The Wink. I’m talking about the well-timed, perfectly-placed wink that says, “We’ve got an understanding, you and me.” A secret handshake crammed into half a second. One wink to the kid you haven’t seen in a few days, or the colleague who just survived a meeting that should’ve been an email and you’re both suddenly on the same page. Priceless.

The Smile. The genuine, crinkles-at-the-eyes, “I’m actually bloody pleased you’re here,” smile. The one that lands like perfectly at 8:45am when someone’s already dreading the day. You’d be amazed what that does to a person.

The barista who remembers your order, your name, your dog’s name – isn’t just making your coffee. They’re making you feel like you belong. That’s the whole game, whether you’re running a café, a classroom, or a school.

So tomorrow, before you check your emails, get out and about school… Nod, Wink, Smile. Watch what happens.

You’re welcome!
